Place & story
A letting under the Earl of Thomond
Clare Libraries' account of the Books of Survey and Distribution records a permanent letting of Doonsallagh by the Earl of Thomond to James Woulfe at an annual rent of £40, around 1712. It appears in a wider list of lettings covering places including Quilty, Doonbeg and Miltown's surrounding townlands, placing Doonsallagh within the estate's network of rented lands. [2]
The school amalgamation of 1975
Dunsallagh National School, using an alternative spelling of the place's name, was included in the Department of Education's decision to amalgamate it with three Miltown schools. Four classrooms, an office and toilets were added to the southern end of the existing St Joseph's school in Miltown Malbay to accommodate the change. The amalgamation took effect in September 1975, establishing the co-educational Scoil Naomh Íosaf described in the parish's school history. [3]
A teacher’s history and memories
Teacher Rena Uí Loinsigh compiled and published a history of Dunsallagh school. She also recorded an interview with Sorcha Curtin for Oidhreacht an Chláir's 2017 community memories project. Its 2018 screening notice described her recollections of teaching in the small rural school and its larger Miltown successor, along with her work in music and drama and her service as a church organist. The project preserved a teacher's perspective on the change between the two schools. [4]
