Place & story

School and barracks

The community history project described in 2012 traced the old school at Creenkillmore, used from 1841 to 1941. A replacement opened in 1942 nearer Gathabawn village, in Foyle North, retaining the official name Creenkill National School. The project also investigated the village’s former RIC barracks, built about 1820; its site later became the Millennium Garden. [2]

People & connections

Reeling in the years

In 2012, a group of sixteen local researchers assembled a village history project with help from community elders and former hurlers. Residents contributed about 1,000 photographs and video recordings. The resulting DVD brought around 150 people into the church on the opening evening of the June reunion weekend, reconnecting former neighbours through images of local farming, sport and family occasions.
