Place & story

A working hamlet in 1943

Irish Tourist Association surveyor Ralph Lucas visited on 27 September 1943 and described Cranny as a scattered hamlet. He recorded a Catholic church, curate’s house, three-teacher school, creamery and two licensed premises. The creamery handled poultry and eggs as well as milk. A post office dealt in letters without telephone or telegraph services, and a football field provided a local recreation ground. [2]

Remembering Peadar Clancy

Pat Shannon’s local account records the disruption of Peadar Clancy’s memorial Mass in Cranny in November 1920, when British army and police personnel arrived seeking local volunteers. The connection continued in later commemoration: in 2016 the Peadar Clancy Summer School committee unveiled a memorial sculpture outside the village’s Peadar Clancy National School. The sculpture places the remembrance of the revolutionary beside a continuing community institution. [3]
