Place & story
A watermill in the village
Craanford’s restored watermill preserves the machinery of a rural corn-grinding trade. The mill’s own account describes a building with roughly four centuries of history, restored by the Lyons family. Its surviving equipment gives the village a particularly tangible link with the processing of grain. [2]
Michael Lyons’s restoration
A 1999 newspaper report described how Michael Lyons spent three years restoring the mill where he had learned the trade as a child in the 1930s. It had ceased operating in 1948. Returning after decades of farming, he found the machinery still in place and repaired the building and gearing. The restored overshot waterwheel powered the grinding stones again, while the former kiln loft accommodated a café. [3]
