Place & story
A church predating the rebellion
St Lawrence's Catholic Church at Glynn is dated 1789. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records damage in 1798, when its thatched roof was destroyed, but identifies surviving original fabric in the building. Its T-shaped arrangement places transepts across the nave, with the sanctuary at their junction. Later work included the reordering of the sanctuary in 1975–76 and further renovation in 1998, allowing the earlier form to remain part of a changing place of worship. [2]
Memorial glass and decorative details
The church's artistic features include the Byrne-Whitty memorial window, signed in 1957 by A W Lyons and Company of Westland Row, Dublin. The heritage survey also records Art Deco-like stained glass, wall monuments and decorative ceiling plasterwork. Outside, the granite bellcote holds a bronze bell above the entrance. Together with the neighbouring parochial house, the church forms a small group of ecclesiastical buildings within the village. [2]
Two classrooms and a library
A contemporary Wexford People report records the formal opening of Glynn National School's extension in 2015. Bishop Denis Brennan blessed the addition, which provided two classrooms and a library. The rooms were already being used before the ceremony, a distinction noted by the report. Former principals and teachers joined pupils and staff for the occasion. The school also marked its pupils' work towards a Blue Flag during the same celebration. [3]
