Place & story

A house overlooking Clew Bay

Corraun House at Bolinglanna was built for Captain Charles Spencer Scrase Dickins of Coolhurst, Sussex, and was standing by 1884. Its original three-bay front was later enlarged to four bays. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage draws attention to its position facing Clew Bay and Clare Island, and to the red sandstone dressings around its door and windows. These carefully worked openings survive within a building substantially altered during the twentieth century. [2]

Tenants seek a purchase

The estate was still a matter of public concern in March 1912. In the House of Commons, William Doris asked about repeated petitions from tenants of the Dickens estate at Currane, who wanted the Congested Districts Board to purchase the property and relieve overcrowded holdings. Chief Secretary Augustine Birrell confirmed that the Board had received several petitions and was corresponding with the trustees’ solicitor. His reply records negotiations in progress; it does not establish a completed sale. [3]

A company formed during the Truce

The West Mayo historical project records that a Currane company was formed during the Truce period, initially within the Newport battalion of the West Mayo Brigade. In January 1922 it transferred to the third battalion of the newly formed North West Mayo brigade. Michael Gallagher is listed as its commanding officer, with Pat Patten and Patrick O’Malley as lieutenants. The unit’s changing affiliation places this small coastal community within the reorganisation of local republican forces after the War of Independence. [4]
