Place & story
A lodge from the rebuilt estate
The gate lodge at Dawson Grove was built in 1847, during the transformation of the earlier house into Dartrey House. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage attributes it to William Burn, whose work on the estate gave its buildings a Jacobean character. Mottled red brick contrasts with pale limestone dressings, while gables, lattice-pattern glazing and decorative timberwork make the small entrance building distinctive. It also served as a post office. [2]
The Dawson Temple
The memorial to Lady Anne Dawson on Black Island was completed in 1774. A red-brick exterior and finely carved limestone front enclose a domed interior lit through a central opening, drawing on the Pantheon in Rome. Conservation architect John Redmill attributes the design to James Wyatt while noting that definitive commission documents remain elusive. Joseph Wilton supplied the marble memorial sculpture; the building commemorates Lady Anne rather than marking her original burial place. [3] [4]
From demesne to forest
The former Dawson estate is now Dartrey Forest, managed by Coillte for commercial forestry alongside walking trails. The Dromore River links its series of lakes, giving the surviving estate features their waterside setting. Coillte identifies a Famine wall beside the Cootehill–Rockcorry road. Routes named for Fairfield, the Deer Park and the Temple retain the vocabulary of the former demesne within a landscape whose principal use has changed. [5]
