Place & story
A crossroads named for its post office family
The former post office and shop give Swan’s Cross Roads a tangible connection with its name. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage associates the crossroads with the family who operated the post office around the turn of the twentieth century. The premises served the surrounding rural community at the meeting of the Ballybay–Newbliss and Rockcorry–Monaghan roads, an intersection subsequently altered by the construction of a roundabout. [2]
Sloan’s surviving shopfront
The house beside the former shop dates from about 1840. Its sash windows have decorative surrounds, including small floral details, while the shopfront retains the name W. Sloan. Another identifying feature is the iron railing formed from the letters SWANN beneath the former shop window. Slate cladding on the side wall adds a less common building detail to this conspicuous group of roadside premises. [2]
Monaghan Road station
Nearby at Lismaconway, the former Monaghan Road station preserves part of the railway complex on the route between Ballybay and Newbliss. Built about 1855, the station has limestone walls, sandstone dressings and trefoil-headed windows. The architectural survey records the ticket-office window and timber ceiling panelling among its surviving interior features. The platform and altered stationmaster’s house also remained when surveyed in 2012, after the railway buildings had passed into other uses. [3]
