Place & story
An industrial quay
The historic-building survey records a limestone quay at the former works in Ballylig, shown on the 1832 Ordnance Survey map. Beside it, a later bulwark was made by stacking cement-filled bags: the hardened material retained impressions of the woven sacks after they decayed. The railway ran immediately behind the quay. [2]
Changing cement production
In July 1978, Northern Ireland Secretary Roy Mason told Parliament that the owners planned to close Magheramorne’s two oldest kilns while continuing to operate a recently overhauled third kiln. Studies were examining replacement manufacturing capacity elsewhere in Northern Ireland. [3]
