Place & story

The old church carried into later tombs

An archaeological survey of Kilmoyly graveyard in 2010 found much of the medieval church’s dressed stone reused in later tombs. The Corridan tombs incorporate carved window pieces, preserving architectural fragments removed from the older building. Only a small pointed doorway remained in its original position among the church’s dressed features. The burial ground therefore preserves evidence of the medieval church both in its ruin and in monuments built from its stone. [2]

The Sacred Heart church

The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart is dated 1873. Its Gothic design combines a tall nave, a lower southern aisle and a polygonal sanctuary. Inside, marble and limestone columns carry pointed arches, while exposed timber trusses support the roof. The national architectural inventory also records the carved altar and reredos retained through later changes to the sanctuary, giving the interior several distinct layers of craftsmanship. [3]

People & connections

Learning the local game

In a 2016 interview, Kilmoyley hurler Daniel Collins recalled beginning with the club at eight or nine, encouraged through his primary school. He described the importance of later playing for Causeway Comprehensive against schools outside Kerry, gaining experience in major grounds and against future county players. His account connects a small local club with the wider school and county pathways through which north Kerry hurlers developed their game. [4]
