Place & story

A cruciform village church

The Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1845 at Moneynamuck (Stopford), in Galmoy village. Its cross-shaped plan combines a nave, transepts and a shallow chancel, while pointed windows and a bellcote give the exterior its Gothic character. Inside, galleries extend into the transepts. The national architectural inventory records stained glass, timber fittings and a tall Gothic high altar surviving alongside later changes to the sanctuary. [2]

The earthwork near Coady’s Castle

An earthwork at nearby Castletown came to archaeological attention during assessment for the Galmoy lead-zinc mine. Paul Stevens excavated it in May and June 1999 before expansion of the tailings pond. The hastily formed bastions and entrance defences suggested a temporary military work. Military and domestic objects were tentatively assigned to the seventeenth or eighteenth century; the report connected the fort, cautiously, with later fortification of Coady’s Castle. Prehistoric pottery in the ditch also indicated earlier activity nearby. [3]

A mining landscape recorded for the future

The original Galmoy mine ceased production in October 2012. Its closure generated an unusually extensive public record: geological and geotechnical information, groundwater data, mining records and closure plans were released in March 2017. These records preserve the working landscape beneath and around Galmoy, as well as the engineering and environmental questions involved in ending a mining operation. They form a documentary counterpart to the older remains exposed during mine construction. [4]
