Place & story
St Augustine’s church
St Augustine’s Catholic church dates to 1893. The architectural inventory records a T-shaped plan, a projecting entrance porch and a bellcote above the gable. Buttresses and pointed openings give the rendered building its Gothic character. Stone gate piers and iron gates mark the entrance to its grounds. [2]
From schoolhouse to community hall
The school’s own history dates its earlier building near the church to 1890 and identifies it as the later community hall. A replacement school opened in 1952, built by the contractor McNamara of Lisdoonvarna and blessed by Bishop Browne of Galway. Gortown National School amalgamated with St Augustine’s in 1966. Renovation and an extension followed in 2009. [3]
