Place & story

The team of 1888

Ogonnelloe won the Clare county hurling championship in 1888. The club’s account names John Fitzgibbon and Michael Gaynor among the players who travelled to America that September with the GAA’s touring party. Their journey gives this small east Clare community a place in the association’s early efforts to establish connections across the Atlantic. [2]

People & connections

Dr Stuart Park

The club opened Dr Stuart Park on 6 July 1986, naming the ground after Joe Stuart. Stuart became GAA president in 1958 and had also refereed major hurling finals. The ground’s name commemorates a career spanning playing-field administration, refereeing and leadership of the national association, while providing a permanent home for local hurling. [2]

The Purdon family’s church

The former Church of Ireland church at Rahena Beg was built around 1860 by the Purdon family. Its three-stage entrance tower has battlements and pinnacles, while pointed windows have cut-stone surrounds. The architectural inventory records alterations around 1985 for residential use. The building remains a distinctive part of the wider Ogonnelloe landscape, with its graveyard and stone font. [3]
