Place & story
The Visitation church and its older neighbour
The Church of the Visitation was built in 1815 on a cruciform plan. Its carved limestone bellcote is a distinctive feature, set above the former projecting chimney on the west gable. Ridge cresting and stone crosses provide further decoration to the slate roof. The adjoining burial ground contains the ruined medieval parish church, bringing successive generations of religious building together on one village site. [2]
A thatched house of two storeys
The Thatch dates to about 1800 and was recorded by the architectural survey as a house adapted for use as a public house. Its two-storey form is particularly unusual for a surviving thatched dwelling. The building has a hipped reed roof, thick stone walls and a windbreak around the entrance, reached by limestone steps. Later lean-to additions record the gradual adaptation of the house rather than replacement of its original form. [3]
A field lent for football
A letter dated 16 April 1931 in the Healy family papers thanks Mrs Lysaght of Kilbury, Cloneen, for letting local GAA teams practise in her field. It was signed by club president Thos. J. Keating and secretary James McGrath. Preserved and catalogued by Tipperary Studies, this brief document records the practical support behind organised sport: a landowner’s permission mattered alongside the work of players and club officers.
