Place & story
The church of 1863
The Church of the Assumption was built in 1863 on a cruciform plan, with a nave, transepts and chancel. Its entrance front uses cut sandstone, contrasting with the limestone of the porches and other walls. Pointed windows carry intersecting stone tracery and stained glass. Ornate iron gates and carved limestone piers complete the approach. The building was rededicated as the Church of the Assumption in 1956, adding a later chapter to its nineteenth-century fabric. [2]
John Power’s altar
The high altar was designed by John Power and made by Early and Powells, Dublin church decorators. The Irish Builder described and illustrated it in August 1869. Marble, Caen stone and brass frame a Pietà with mourning angels, while the carved reredos depicts scenes including the Annunciation and the Flight into Egypt. This combination of architectural design and specialised workshop production gave a small rural church an unusually elaborate sanctuary. [2]
Mooresfort in the parish landscape
Mooresfort was the home of the Crosbie Moore family in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Maurice Crosbie Moore was resident in 1837. After the property was advertised for sale in 1852, Charles Moore of County Antrim acquired it and remodelled the house, reducing it from three storeys to two. The university's estate survey follows the property into the twentieth century, showing how a change of ownership also altered the form of a familiar parish landmark. [3]
