Place & story

A replacement church at Stramatt

St Matthew's Catholic Church at Stramatt, in the Lisduff district, was built in 1858 to replace an earlier T-shaped chapel in nearby Pollintemple. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records competing attributions of the design to John Ryan and William Hague, rather than identifying a settled architect. The church's appearance changed around 1970, when its spire was removed and the slate roof altered, leaving the western tower visibly truncated. [2]

The church interior

Inside St Matthew's, a timber gallery overlooks the nave from the west, beneath a substantial trussed roof. The sanctuary is approached through a pointed arch carried on small columns with carved foliage capitals. Gothic detailing continues in the altar and reredos, while pointed niches mark the side altars. Coloured glass survives in the timber porch-lobby doors. The national survey also records replacement pews and confessionals dating from around 1970, distinguishing later fittings from older work. [2]

O’Daly’s Bridge at Edenburt

Farther south-east, O'Daly's Bridge at Edenburt crosses the Blackwater between Cavan and Meath. A date stone records its construction in 1762. Six round-headed stone arches rest on piers protected by pointed cutwaters, stepped at different heights along the bridge. A refuge projects from the eastern parapet. The national survey treats the structure as evidence of eighteenth-century road development, while noting later interventions including concrete bases added to the piers around 2000. [3]
