Place & story
A market and post town
Samuel Lewis described Stradone in 1837 as a market and post town on the road from Virginia to Ballyhaise. A Monday market and seven annual fairs served the surrounding farming district. His account also records a police station and dispensary, showing the village’s role as a local service centre alongside its livestock trade. [2]
The vanished estate house
Stradone House stood in an adjoining demesne in Drumlaunaght townland. The University of Galway’s estate history records John Benjamin Keane’s 1828 design for Major Thomas Burrowes. The family remained in possession into the twentieth century, until the house burned in June 1921. Although the mansion disappeared, its stables and a gate lodge survived, preserving parts of the estate’s built setting. [3]
A Greek Revival gate lodge
The surviving lodge dates to around 1845 and is distinct from an earlier lodge that was demolished. The architectural inventory tentatively attributes it to Keane. Its classical entrance porch, hipped roof and unusual arrangement of windows give a small building considerable architectural presence. Raised corner strips imitate classical antae, continuing the Greek Revival treatment around the exterior. [4]
