Place & story

Earlier chapels

The architectural inventory traces a succession of Catholic churches at Termon. A mud-walled building at Termon Cross dated to 1785. A thatched chapel replaced it in 1810, on ground north of the present church. Another church followed in 1870, with a belfry and curate’s house added in 1883. These repeated building campaigns document the community’s changing places of worship. [2]

A modern roadside landmark

The present Saint Mary’s was built in 1973 and renovated and reroofed in 1992. Its broad slate roof, angled window groups and central stone-clad panel distinguish it from a conventional nineteenth-century church. Inside, exposed laminated timber beams cross the ceiling, and the T-shaped arrangement brings the congregation towards the altar. A separate steel belfry stands beside the building. [2]

Objects carried forward

Despite the replacement of successive buildings, older furnishings remained part of Saint Mary’s. The inventory records the survival of the bell, baptismal font, altar bell and an 1810 date-stone from earlier churches. These objects give the modern building a tangible connection with its predecessors, preserving elements of local religious life through substantial changes in architecture. [2]
