Place & story
The estate chapel
The surviving chapel at Jenkinstown House dates from about 1825. Built as a private Catholic estate chapel, it later served parish worship before being decommissioned in 1983. Its battlements, pointed windows and finely cut limestone details belong to the Gothic remodelling of a once much larger house complex for Sir Patrick Bellew. The attached domestic range includes a later reconstruction using salvaged material. The remains therefore preserve parts of successive buildings rather than an intact original mansion. [2]
Thomas Moore’s local association
A walled lawn beside Jenkinstown House commemorates Thomas Moore’s association with the estate. Coillte’s account identifies the house as the place where he wrote The Last Rose of Summer while staying there. The commemoration keeps the poet’s connection visible within the former Bryan Bellew estate landscape, alongside the architectural remnants of the house itself. [3]
Woodland and working remains
Jenkinstown’s woods were once part of the Bryan Bellew estate. Coillte identifies a Chinese necklace poplar as a survivor of park planting from the 1870s, while stands of beech support a spring display of bluebells. The landscape also retains a threshing-mill building near the car park, a reminder of estate work beyond the main house. Woodland paths pass Saint Colman’s Well and through old doorways in the walls, linking these smaller features with the former grounds. [3]
