Place & story

Saint Brigid’s and the changing village

The parish history records that Father O'Flaherty built a thatched church in 1806 near the present village, about half a mile from the older settlement by the graveyard. The later Saint Brigid's is a substantial stone church with a nave and side aisles divided by pointed arches. Sandstone walls, limestone details and an exposed roof distinguish its interior and exterior. Its development belongs to the nineteenth-century rebuilding of the village's religious centre. [2] [3]

The Duagh ciborium

In 1923 an eighteenth-century silver ciborium was discovered in turf delivered to the presbytery from a bog some five kilometres away. The parish account says the priest found the vessel inside a sod. It interprets the concealment as safekeeping during the penal period, an explanation that should remain distinct from the documented discovery. The object connects Duagh with the survival and later recovery of church furnishings outside their original setting. [2]

Five schools become one

Saint Brigid's National School opened in 1971 as a central school, bringing together pupils from five smaller schools: Duagh, Islandanny, Derrindaffe, Dromlegach and Knockalougha. Nine teachers formed the opening staff. The change concentrated education from a dispersed rural parish in one larger institution on the Listowel–Abbeyfeale road. It represents a substantial reorganisation of local school life, rather than the beginning of education in Duagh itself. [4]
