Place & story

The volunteer rescue crew

An RTÉ Newsbeat report broadcast on 10 September 1965 recorded the quarterly inspection of Glenderry's Coast Guard Life Saving Service. Captain Philip Duggan, superintendent for the west coast, inspected a fifteen-member volunteer crew. They brought out a wagon already forty years old, carrying rockets, maroons and breeches buoys. The report documents a shore-based rescue service whose equipment depended on volunteers assembling and working together when a vessel came into danger. [2]

Practising a line to a wreck

The same report describes two exercises demonstrated at Glenderry. A maroon fired from a mortar gave the signal for the crew to gather. A rocket then carried a line towards a practice post 110 metres away, representing a stranded vessel. Three men acting as its crew signalled with a white flag when they had received the line, allowing hauling to begin. The drill rehearsed the practical sequence needed to establish a connection from shore. [2]

An old school reused

The public-library learning resource Ask About Ireland records that Glenderry's former national school became a craft museum after pupils moved to a new building. Scoil Naomh Erc, the local school, identifies 1963 as its establishment date. Read together, the accounts distinguish the continuing educational institution from an older school building that acquired a different community use. The library account records that reuse without supplying its opening date as a museum. [3] [4]
