Place & story

Evidence near the lost royal residence

Clonroad More lies near the presumed site of the O'Brien royal residence that helped shape medieval Ennis. Work at the wastewater treatment plant in 1941 recovered medieval and later objects, human remains and traces of paving, although much material came from disturbed spoil. Later investigations in 2012 and 2014 found no further archaeological deposits, a result qualified by extensive remodelling of the treatment-works site. [2]

The Rocky Road

A lane known as the Rocky Road was used by pilgrims until the 1960s and may follow an older connection between Ennis Friary and Killone Abbey. Archaeological testing for the Ennis bypass in 2003 examined ground beside the lane and associated stone enclosures. The trenches revealed no significant archaeological remains; a shallow stone spread was judged comparatively recent. The proposed medieval connection therefore remains a possibility rather than an excavated conclusion. [3]

The Gothic Revival college

Saint Flannan's College forms a substantial educational landmark in Clonroad More. Designed in 1878 and built between 1879 and 1889, the three-storey limestone building has a U-shaped plan, a tall central entrance tower and projecting gabled ends. Pointed openings, a crenellated porch and bands of contrasting slate reinforce its Gothic Revival design. Extensions in 1952, 1962, 1968 and 1980 record the campus's subsequent development. [4]
