Place & story
The Russell family’s music
Doolin’s musical reputation is closely associated with the Russell brothers. Micho Russell, born nearby at Doonagore in 1915, learned songs in Irish and English from his parents and played with his brothers at house dances. His mother played concertina, his father sang sean-nós, and both Pakie and Gussie became accomplished musicians. [2]
A local repertoire heard abroad
Micho learned tunes from older local players and became known for his whistle playing and singing. The folk revival brought festival and concert appearances across Europe and America. He won the All-Ireland whistle competition in 1973 and took part in the Smithsonian’s bicentennial festival in Washington in 1976. Recordings helped carry the family’s Doolin repertoire to a wider audience. [2]
