Place & story
Stonework on the shore
The national architectural inventory records Kilbaha’s pier under Kilbaha South. Built in rubble stone, it retains stone steps, parapet walls and cut-stone bollards. These practical features served the loading and securing of boats at the bay. [2]
Two harbour schemes
Brian Goggin’s waterways account distinguishes Alexander Nimmo’s failed 1822 harbour from the replacement pier by James Donnell. The earlier entrance was cut through the beach. Goggin reproduces Donnell’s 1830 report that the replacement had already saved men and property from shipwreck while unfinished. [3]
