Place & story
A new schoolhouse
Phyllis Malone’s study records separate girls’ and boys’ national schools established in the village in 1853 and 1854. A new schoolhouse was erected in 1887 with separate classrooms and entrances. School records give an opening date of 1 May 1888, although Malone notes a differing date in another report. The two schools amalgamated in October 1926 as enrolment declined. [2]
From church to community centre
The Diocese of Killaloe records that Labasheeda’s present St Kieran’s church was built in 1976 by voluntary labour. Its bell and seating came from the previous church. The older building subsequently became a community centre, continuing its place in village life through a new use. [3]
