Place & story

Shannon Commission markers

Querrin Pier was built in the 1840s as part of the Shannon Commission’s programme of river piers. Robert Brown’s illustrated local history identifies four granite markers bearing the initials SC around the pier, including a stone with a broad-arrow mark. The harbour served fishing boats and the movement of goods along the estuary, particularly towards Limerick. [2]

Building a place to play

Brown’s account of the handball alley dates its first construction by local people to 1910, followed by improvements in 1945 and 1985. Father Dick Lillis helped raise money through concerts in Querrin and other west Clare communities. The account recalls younger players taking their turn before adults arrived and the difficulty of recovering balls lost beyond the alley. [3]
