Place & story
The Hungerford residence
Cahermore House was a Hungerford residence by the later eighteenth century. In 1851 Thomas Hungerford leased it from the Bishop of Cork’s estate, and Henry Hungerford owned it in 1906. The University of Galway’s estate database records its destruction by fire in June 1921. An Irish Tourist Association survey still described the ruined house in 1944; the building subsequently disappeared. [2]
Documents beyond the vanished building
Clonakilty Museum’s Hungerford material preserves several traces of Cahermore’s household and estate. A photograph records the house around 1890, while a bookplate carries Thomas Hungerford’s arms from its library. A typescript copies an address presented by tenants to Henry Jones Hungerford in January 1870. These objects retain evidence of the family’s possessions and public relationships after the loss of the house itself. [3]
A literary family connection
Novelist Margaret Wolfe Hungerford had a connection to Cahermore through her second marriage to Thomas Henry Hungerford. The museum’s account records that her father-in-law opposed the marriage and the couple lived in Bandon, where she wrote to support their family. This marriage links her literary career with the wider history of the Cahermore family. She died in 1897. [3]
