Place & story

A nineteenth-century water pump

A cast-iron water pump in Derrynacaheragh dates from around 1890. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records its banded shaft, fluted neck and cap, finial and curved handle ending in a ball. Set on a concrete platform within rendered boundary walls, it combines decorative casting with a practical purpose. The inventory recognises its artistic, social and technical interest. [2]

A post box from around 1930

The local post box provides a later example of cast-iron street furniture. The National Inventory dates it to around 1930 and records a rounded head, raised display panel and P&T emblem. The box is mounted on a replacement post. Together with the older pump, it preserves visible evidence of the public services that served a dispersed rural community. [3]

A company in the Third Cork Brigade

Military Archives lists Dernichara, also called Derrinacahara, among the companies of the Third Battalion, Third Cork Brigade, on 11 July 1921. The company appears again in the reorganised battalion's list for 1 July 1922. These administrative records establish a local organisational presence during the revolutionary period, while distinguishing the company from neighbouring units at Togher, Behagh and Dunmanway. [4]
