Place & story

People & connections

Myles Byrne of Ballylusk

Myles Byrne was born in 1780 at Ballylusk, near Monaseed. He joined the United Irishmen in 1797 and fought in the 1798 rebellion, including the engagements at Tubberneering, Arklow and Vinegar Hill. After involvement in Robert Emmet’s attempted uprising in 1803, he escaped to France and served in the Irish Legion. His widow published his memoirs after his death in Paris in 1862. [2]

Monaseed House

Monaseed House was standing by 1777. The architectural inventory describes a compact farmhouse with its main floor raised above a basement and reached by eleven granite steps. A carefully cut stone doorway provides its principal ornament. Outbuildings and a walled garden preserve the wider farm setting, while nineteenth- and early twentieth-century records connect the property with the Moore family. [3]

From a single room to a larger school

The national school’s history records pay schools in the locality in 1826–27, including teaching in the church, and a one-room school operating in 1865 on the later hall site. A new building erected in 1913 opened on 14 September 1914 with two teachers, twenty-five boys and fifty-two girls. Subsequent expansion included a third teacher in 1957 and a major renovation formally opened in 1992. [4]
