Place & story
Saint James’s Church
Saint James’s Catholic Church was built between 1838 and 1843 to a design attributed to Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. Changes in 1865 produced its later composition, including the prominent five-stage western tower. The rectangular church has slender Gothic windows and an exposed timber roof; its sanctuary was reordered in 1972. [2]
The former national school
The national school associated with Saint Louis’s Convent was built in 1886. Its T-shaped plan centres on a projecting entrance porch, with sandstone walls, granite details and pointed windows giving it a Gothic character. After closure as a school, it was renovated for another use in 1993; the architectural inventory recorded it as a day centre. [3]
