Place & story

A settlement in the transport corridor

Capparoe lies within the broad lowland between the Silvermines uplands and the Arra Mountains. A planning inspector’s description records this as a natural route between Nenagh and Limerick, followed by the railway and major roads. Wet grazing ground, drainage channels and hedged farmland characterise the surrounding townlands. Within this setting, the 2013 Tidy Towns adjudicator described Capparoe as a scattered village extending along four roads from a central crossroads, rather than a compact street of buildings. [2] [3]

The school became a community centre

When a new school opened at Lissenhall in 1962, former pupils organised to preserve the old building and convert it into a community centre. Volunteer labour helped make the transition, and the centre opened in 1963. It hosted card games, Irish dancing, crafts, badminton and concerts. On 5 March 1977, more than two hundred former pupils gathered there for a reunion. William Fogarty’s history recalls the pleasure of meeting former teacher Pat Cleary, returning to the building after forty years. [4]

Plays and a changing village corner

The Lissenhall Players began in 1963, staging the one-act comedy The Romantic Lover under Fr Eamon Gilmartin and Professor Tim under Dick Tobin. Their performances became an enduring part of the community centre’s life. Beyond the hall, another meeting place developed at Ned’s Corner. The 2013 Tidy Towns report recorded picnic benches, planted beds and gravel paths there, together with an old telephone box. It also noted a village Gathering sign assembled from discarded computer-keyboard letters and numbers. [4] [3]
