Place & story

The church of 1822

Coolbaun Church stands in Kilbiller townland, approached through gates along a tree-lined avenue. Built in 1822 through the Board of First Fruits, it has a lower eastern chancel and a western tower rising in three stages. Squared limestone walls, diagonal buttresses and pointed openings give the small building a Gothic character. Its surrounding burial ground remains part of the historic setting. [2]

Castle Cambie’s successive building phases

Nearby Castletown, formerly called Castle Cambie, overlooks Lough Derg. Its four-storey fortified core dates to around 1600, while a two-storey wing was added around 1820 and connected by a taller linking block. Defensive loops survive alongside domestic sash windows, illustrating the building's changing use. Battlements conceal the roofs, and a pointed entrance connects the contrasting early and later parts. [3]

A gate lodge of three linked blocks

Castletown's gate lodge was built around 1790. Its unusual plan consists of three small gabled blocks, with the outer sections projecting and the rooms linked only at their corners. The central block contains the entrance, flanked by windows. This modest estate building provides a different scale of accommodation from the main house, while retaining a distinctive architectural design of its own. [4]
