Place & story

A market town in retreat

Samuel Lewis's 1837 account describes Cullen as a former market town with 498 villagers. Its wider parish crossed the Tipperary–Limerick boundary. The village had a constabulary post and two annual fairs, one held in May or June and the other on 29 October. [2]

The village behind the directory

In 1889 Bassett listed Joseph Reynolds as postmaster and Matt Hogan and Mrs H. Hogan as national-school teachers. The district's dairying farms used Oola's railway station; a village pig fair survived after the cattle fairs disappeared. [3]

Gold beneath the turf

The Bog of Cullen yielded numerous bronze and gold objects during turf cutting over roughly seventy years. The National Museum places these discoveries within the wider Late Bronze Age practice of depositing valuable objects in wet places. The quantity of finds suggests that such landscapes had special significance. Lewis already noted an antiquarian report presented by Governor Pownall to the Society of Antiquaries in 1774, showing how Cullen's discoveries entered archaeological discussion long before modern excavation methods.
