Place & story
Building and replacing a school
Templederry National School’s 2012 jubilee history records the first national school in Curreeny in 1864, on the site later occupied by the community centre. By 1913 the building was in serious disrepair. The account explains that its non-vested status prevented the Commissioners of National Education from funding repairs. A replacement was built in the middle of the 1910s. [2]
A new use for the building
During the 1960s the pupils and teacher Maura Ryan transferred from Curreeny to Templederry as small schools were amalgamated. A prefabricated classroom at Templederry accommodated the additional children. The former Curreeny school subsequently became the area’s community centre. This change retained a local gathering place even after teaching moved elsewhere, giving the building another role in the community it had served. [2]
