Place & story

St Mary’s and an earlier date stone

The architectural inventory dates St Mary's Catholic Church at Grangemockler to about 1880. Its cruciform plan contains marble columns, an ornate marble reredos and a timber scissors-truss roof strengthened with tension bars. Outside, a carved limestone bellcote and carefully worked door surrounds distinguish the building. A date stone from the earlier church, inscribed 1805, survives in the boundary wall, preserving a link with the site's previous place of worship. [2]

People & connections

Remembering Michael Hogan

A statue commemorating Michael Hogan was unveiled in Grangemockler during the centenary weekend of Bloody Sunday in November 2020. Hogan was the Tipperary footballer killed at Croke Park on 21 November 1920. In the GAA's contemporary account, committee member Joan Tobin explained how descendants of local players and Hogan's grandniece helped organise the project. The memorial grew from both the club's initiative and family memories that had remained part of village life. [3] [4]

A county title in 2023

Grangemockler-Ballyneale won the Tipperary intermediate football championship after a replay against Aherlow in November 2023. The GAA report records a recovery from seven points behind early in the match, with a late free by Mikey Lyons deciding the contest. The success followed defeats in the 2020 and 2021 finals. It brought the Bill Barrett Cup to the club, a trophy named for one of Michael Hogan's former county teammates. [4]
