Place & story
The school and the upheaval of 1848
Mai Ryan's history, published by Kilcommon National School, dates its beginnings to 1829 in the chapel grounds under landlord John Hunt's patronage. Edward O'Dwyer was the first teacher, and the school gained national recognition in 1835. His successor Edward O'Brien lost his position in August 1848, accused of encouraging insurrection. John Ward was appointed that November. The sequence places a local classroom within the political tensions of the famine years. [2]
Separate classrooms and a later move
A new school building opened in 1885 with separate boys' and girls' schools under one roof, each with its own principal and assistant. They amalgamated in January 1935, when about 150 pupils were enrolled. The school history records a further move at Easter 1960, supervised by acting principal Sarah O'Dwyer, into a building dating from 1958. The former two-roomed school subsequently became the community hall. [2]
St Patrick’s architectural details
St Patrick's Catholic church dates from around 1875. Its roof combines patterned bands of slate with decorative iron ridge cresting, while the front windows sit within pointed recesses between stone buttresses. Inside, timber trusses support the boarded ceiling and a carved marble reredos rises behind the altar. The National Inventory treats the church, neighbouring graveyard, prayer garden and parochial house as a group that contributes to Kilcommon's village setting. [3]
