Place & story
The school and its amalgamation
Kilross national school served the village from 1871 until 2015. Its closure ended 144 years of schooling in the village, a history later commemorated by the community. Saint Ailbe’s National School in nearby Emly records the other side of that transition: in 2015 it amalgamated with Kilross–Knockcarron National School. The two accounts connect the end of the village school with a continuing educational institution in the surrounding district. [2] [3]
An educational remembrance garden
Kilross Tidy Towns created an educational remembrance garden on the Old Road, opened by July 2018. The diocese of Cashel and Emly provided the site. Local organisers compiled a record of former pupils, their townlands and the years they started school. Wood carvings depict a hedge-school scene, alongside a mural, seating and planting. Donated gates were restored for the entrance, giving the community a physical place in which to remember its school. [2]
