Place & story
The eighteenth-century chapel
A local parish history preserves details from Archbishop Butler's visitation of 11 July 1754. The chapel serving Moyglass then had stone walls, a thatched roof and two glazed windows. Its altar was made from deal boards, and the recorded equipment included vestments, a chalice and a missal. These particulars offer a glimpse of the building used before the nineteenth-century church. [2]
Replacing the village church
Father Patrick O'Flanagan built the later church in 1837 at a recorded cost of £1,500. It remained in use until November 1988. A foundation stone for its replacement was laid on 23 March 1989. The local account names John Kennedy as architect and John Maher as building contractor, and records the new church's dedication to Saint Joseph the Worker. [2]
Knockanglass House
Nearby Knockanglass House dates from about 1800. Its balanced three-bay front, hipped roof and doorway with a cobweb fanlight reflect its Georgian design. The architectural inventory associates the house with the Langley family, whose estate included Moyglass. It records that the O'Dwyers bought the property in 1912 after the estate was divided. A courtyard of outbuildings lies behind the house. [3]
