Place & story
A chapel and school before the Famine
Samuel Lewis’s description of Clonoulty parish in 1837 identifies Rossmore as the site of both a Catholic chapel and a school. The wider Catholic district also included Clogher, with its other chapel at Clonoulty. Lewis describes a landscape of limestone, productive farmland and bog, served by fairs and petty sessions. His school attendance figures concern several parish schools together, but the separate mention of Rossmore establishes its educational role before the Great Famine. [2]
Canon Horan’s copybook
A small handwritten history of Clonoulty and Rossmore survives in a school copybook written by Canon Patrick Horan, who lived from 1892 to 1985. It was found in the Horan farmhouse at Rossmore and loaned by the family to Tipperary Studies for digitisation. The council library’s archive catalogues it within the Rossmore Collection. The document’s survival links a named local writer, a family home and the public preservation of parish history. [3]
The shared hurling club
Clonoulty-Rossmore’s club history records an early county senior hurling championship in 1888, when the club played under Clonoulty’s name. Another county title followed in 1989 after a wait of 101 years, with further victories in 1997 and 2018. Beyond results, the club’s account describes acquiring grounds through the Irish Land Commission’s redistribution of estate land in 1936. Members’ voluntary work helped complete a pavilion in 1957, giving the combined parish a lasting sporting base. [4]
