Place & story
The church and its tower
Templederry’s Church of Ireland church carries the date 1828. A three-stage tower rises beside the nave, its sandstone masonry finished with battlements and pinnacles. Round-headed windows retain cast-iron latticework, while cut limestone surrounds frame the openings. An outside flight of steps reaches a doorway in the tower. The church, graveyard and crypt form a distinctive group. [2]
Moving to a modern school
Templederry National School was built in 1962, with its first pupils arriving in May 1963. Contractor Nicky Callanan employed local people on the work. The school’s golden-jubilee booklet recalls the changes children noticed: a covered play shelter, a concrete yard, numbered cloakroom hooks, and toilets with washbasins. Timber floors and tiled corridors also brought different expectations about footwear and care of the new building. [3]
