Place & story
A town around a crossing
Ennistimon developed around an old bridge at the lowest crossing of the river from the sea. Clare Libraries identifies the narrow street near the bridge as the oldest part of town. A survey of 1703 recorded a castle, a two-storey house, a corn mill and only seven or eight cabins. Later street names, including New Town Street and Market Place, preserve the expansion of this small settlement into a market town. [2]
The courthouse became an arts space
Parliament Street's courthouse served more than the courts. The Ennistymon Poor Law Union's guardians first met there in 1839; later it also hosted a fuel fund committee and occasional entertainment. Court sittings ended in the early 1980s as the building deteriorated. The Old Ennistymon Society took it on during the following decade, and its conversion into artists' studios gave a civic building a new cultural purpose. [3]
A house turned hotel
The Falls Hotel incorporates Ennistymon House, rebuilt as a Georgian residence after Edward O'Brien demolished much of an older castle in 1764. It later passed through the Finucane and MacNamara families. Francis MacNamara opened the house as a hotel in the 1930s. Brendan O'Regan subsequently leased it, gaining hotel experience before his better-known work in catering and commercial services at Shannon Airport. [4]
