Place & story
A clustered village centre
Cox Power Architects designed Kilmeena Village for Mayo County Council around fourteen homes, a community centre and childcare facilities. Their account describes a layout inspired by clusters of farm buildings, creating small shared spaces and sheltered meeting places. The project, beside the church, school and sports ground, won the RIAI housing award in 2011. [2]
Myna National School
The school’s own history dates Myna’s first national-school building to 1841, beside the church. A new site followed in 1925. Rossduane school amalgamated with Myna in 1969, and pupils moved into another replacement building in 1983. The school also uses the name St Brendan’s. [3]
