Place & story
St Patrick’s Church
The present St Patrick’s Church in Cloonan dates to 1927 and was designed by Rudolph Maximilian Butler. Its T-shaped plan brings the nave and transepts together around the sanctuary. A reused stone commemorates a cross and the slating of an earlier chapel in 1856. The sanctuary was reordered in 1988; the interior retains an exposed timber roof and stained glass by William J. Dowling. [2]
A community meeting place
When Castlebar municipal councillors met in Islandeady’s community centre in May 2022, the community council described pressure on its limited space. Foróige meetings were split across two nights. A new eight-acre site had been acquired across the road, and residents were considering a larger centre, sports hall and other facilities. These were proposals presented at that meeting. [3]
