Place & story
An estate sold
Newfield formed part of the McLoughlin family’s extensive Mayo holdings. When their estate came before the Encumbered Estates Court in 1850, Henry J. Smith bought the Newfield portion. The University of Galway’s Landed Estates research links Newfield House first with the McLoughlins and then, in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the Smith estate. [2] [3]
The house’s decline
The university’s house record suggests that Newfield House was already ruined by the end of the nineteenth century. It identifies the remains near the seashore and records continuing agricultural use of some associated farm buildings at the time of its survey. [3]
