Place & story

The crossing over the Urrin

Carley’s Bridge spans the Urrin with three rounded arches beneath a humped roadway. The architectural inventory records it as already standing by 1840. Triangular cutwaters project from the piers, capped with pyramidal stonework, while rubble-stone parapets continue along the road. The bridge belongs to the local network of crossings around Enniscorthy and provides a physical centre for a place also associated with pottery production. [2]

Pottery recorded on film

The makers of the Hands documentary series filmed the Carley’s Bridge pottery in 1980. Their account follows clay from digging and preparation to Paddy Murphy throwing flowerpots and large decorative vessels on the wheel. Dried pots were stacked in coal-fired beehive kilns for firing. The production sequence took about a week. The film preserved a working craft process and the skilled labour behind familiar earthenware garden pots. [3]

People & connections

The Owens family ensemble

Carley’s Bridge House was built in 1868 for George Carley Owens. The farmhouse and its associated outbuildings, kiln and chimney form a group linking domestic life with manufacturing beside the river. The architectural inventory records George Jackson Owens as both a farmer and a brick-and-pottery manufacturer in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Those overlapping occupations help explain why the house and industrial buildings belong to the same local history. [4]
