Place & story

A village on the Cashel road

Samuel Lewis’s 1837 dictionary places New-Inn in Knockgraffon parish, on the road linking Cashel with Cahir and Clonmel. He records 320 inhabitants, a police station and fortnightly petty sessions. Four annual fairs fell in March, May, August and December. Both the parish church and a Catholic chapel stood in the village, making it a local centre for worship, trade and administration. [2]

A country house becomes a college

Nearby Rockwell College incorporates a former country house dating from about 1830, subsequently remodelled for educational use. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage associates parts of the building with William Tinsley. It identifies stained glass attributed to William Dowling above the stairs and early-1940s entrance panels attributed to Evie Hone. These features belong to the college outside the village, rather than to a building on Newinn’s main street. [3]

The college chapel

The Holy Ghost Fathers acquired Rockwell demesne in 1862 and established a junior seminary in 1864. The architectural inventory records their commission to George C. Ashlin for a chapel in 1897. Its limestone façade, openwork belfry, stained glass and exposed timber roof form a distinct addition to the older house. The chapel’s carved gallery, confessionals and patterned floor tiles also survive in the inventory’s description. [4]
