Place & story

Saint Mary’s

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin designed Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in 1843. Its nave opens into side aisles beneath pointed stone arcades, while the transepts end in groups of three lancet windows. Local fieldstone walls contrast with granite dressings. Inside are exposed timber roof structures, an inlaid memorial to parish priest Walter Rowe and a Gothic reredos designed by Earley in 1885. The church was restored in 1992, when new stained glass by George William Walsh was added. [2]
