Place & story
The mill and its water landscape
The old mill complex is a defining feature of Liscolman. The Northern Area Plan identifies its chimney as a local landmark and links the hamlet’s character with its bridge and a stream flowing north towards the Stracam River. The plan groups the former mill, associated buildings and former millpond within a landscape policy area, recognising the industrial site as a connected group rather than a single building. [2]
Stone tools beneath later development
Archaeological monitoring in Straidbilly townland, on the northern side of Liscolman, recovered prehistoric material in 2002. Robert Chapple’s report lists pottery, part of a polished porcellanite axehead, flint scrapers and other worked flints recovered from spoil. Three areas requiring further investigation were also identified. Because these were preliminary monitoring results, the report establishes prehistoric activity without supplying a complete account of the site’s occupation. [3]
The Liscolman food vessel
Ballycastle Museum’s collection includes a Bronze Age pottery food vessel from Liscolman. Its zig-zag surface decoration is highlighted in the museum’s 2026 interpretative design report, which proposes tactile reproductions to help visitors examine the pattern. This object provides a separate surviving link with the area’s prehistoric past; the museum does not identify it as one of the finds from the 2002 monitoring. [4]
