Place & story
The house at Carney Castle
Carney Castle combines the site of an older castle with a later country house. The University of Galway's Landed Estates research traces the property through several families. Catherine Nugent married Dublin attorney Arthur French in 1797; their son Arthur occupied the new house during the 1830s. In 1837 Samuel Lewis described a modern residence on part of the older castle site. Later records show Eliza French holding the house before the property's division and sale interests changed during the nineteenth century. [2]
Finnoe’s small schoolhouse
The former Finnoe School in Carney Commons dates to about 1820. Its simple single-storey form includes an entrance porch, slate roof and small-paned sash windows. The architectural survey notes a fireplace and three windows positioned to provide morning light from the east. Recorded as disused in 2004, the building preserves evidence of early rural education on a modest scale, distinct from the larger estate house nearby. [3]
Carney Commons and Shane MacGowan
Shane MacGowan was born in Kent in 1957 but spent much of his childhood at his mother's family home in Carney Commons. In a 2001 interview later republished by RTÉ, he recalled travelling between England and Tipperary and returning during school holidays. Music among his mother's relatives, the Lynches, and gatherings in the house helped shape his later work with the Pogues. The connection is a formative family home, rather than a claim that Carney was his birthplace. [4]
