Place & story
From estate to demonstration farm
Dovea Genetics traces the estate’s agricultural transformation to a 1944 lecture by cooperative leader Henry Kennedy, attended by Laurence Trant. Trant subsequently offered Dovea as a demonstration farm. Centenary Co-operative bought the house and farm, and its manager Dan O’Mahoney helped organise a regional cattle-breeding service. [2]
A cooperative breeding society
In 1952, fifty-two creameries joined the new South Eastern Cattle Breeding Society. It first leased Dovea House and later bought it as headquarters. The service began with Dairy Shorthorn, Aberdeen Angus and Hereford cattle; Friesians followed in 1955, with continental beef breeds introduced in the early 1970s. [2]
The house and its porch
The architectural inventory dates Dovea House to around 1830. Its five-bay front has gabled dormers, while a glazed cast-iron porch was added around 1870. Coloured glass, decorative metal panels and brackets distinguish this later entrance. Outbuildings and a gate lodge complete the surviving group. [3]
